Business Lunch and Discussion with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria

22 January 2014

The annual traditional business lunch with the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Mr. Plamen Oresharski and his Deputies – the Minister of Labour and Social Policy Mr. Hasan Ademov and the Minister of Regional Development Ms. Desislava Terzieva, organized by AmCham took place on 16th January 2014 in Sheraton Hotel Sofia and aroused great interest from the media.

As in previous years, and considering the event’s importance and the need for continuous dialog between Business and Government – a prerequisite for economic improvement in the county, Penkov, Markov & Partners – Attorneys at Law once again supported the organization of the business lunch.

Nearly 400 people from different business sectors, ambassadors and other official guests attended the event. Among the participants were PM&P’s Managing Partner Mr. Vladimir Penkov, the Partners Svetlin Adrianov and Svetoslav Dimitrov, as well as their colleagues Velyna Hristova and Nikolay Cvetanov.

Some attendants took up the opportunity to ask the Prime Minister various relevant questions. One of the discussed topics, raised by Mr. Penkov, concerned the implementation of a truly functional family taxation as a powerful engine for economic growth in Bulgaria and making it a state priority for the next 20-30 years, and more specifically - options for tax exemptions for investments in education, internet, energy efficiency, new vehicles, etc., as well as the government’s intentions in that direction. A particularly fierce discussion generated the topic of the newly implemented discriminatory and unlawful 20% tax on producers of electricity from renewables together with Mr. Penkov’s short analysis of its possible negative effects, especially in view of the fact that the sector accounts the highest percentage of newly established companies in the country and provides employment for about 10 000 people.
